The designer of this t-shirt had this idea while sitting in a room full of domestic abuse survivors who were living in a shelter. The lesson of the day for these women was for them to share with the group one thing they do regularly for themselves. Most of the women had a very hard time coming up with even one thing they did for themselves. Most of their answers included things they did for their children or for their partners. When the instructor broadened the conversation and included some of the volunteers (all women who were NOT in an abusive relationship), even those volunteers had a hard time coming up with one thing that they did for themselves, and only for their own enjoyment.
The truth is that many women do not take time for themselves. These "Appreciate Yourself" items below are here to remind you each day to take some time for yourself. So, wear them or decorate your room with them very proudly and inspire others to appreciate themselves.
After all, you can only give to others what you have. So, the better you feel and the better you are, the better it is for your loved ones.
Here are some things that some of the women decided to do for themselves at the end of that conversation at the shelter:
Kayla: --- Each Wednesday, I will take 15 minutes for myself to go get a hot chocolate in the coffee place near my house, sit and enjoy my drink very calmly.
Valerie: --- I will take a 15 minutes walk by myself every Saturday.
Lena: --- I will enroll myself in a class at the community college in my town. I have always wanted to go to college, but never made any efforts toward that.
